Gutman, Emanuel-Haim


Son of Shoshana and Israel, was born in 1924 in Germany. In 1933, at the age of nine, he immigrated to Israel with his sister and relatives after they had been raised by his parents. He grew up and was educated in his uncle’s home in Kiryat Motzkin, studied there at the elementary school and was a counselor in the “Scouts” movement. After completing elementary school, he worked in an agricultural farm. In 1941, at the age of 17.5, he enlisted in the British Royal Engineers Corps and served there for four years. During this period, he studied mechanics in Egypt and Tripoli. While he was in the army he organized with other members the nucleus of settlement “Bnei Dror” and prepared his plans. He devoted his day to work and learned nights. After his release he settled in Bnei Dror near Tel Mond and was responsible for a local workshop. He was a member of the Hagana, took courses in the youth movement and took part in activities around Tel Mond, his face was serious and deep, he had a social sense and always weighed every opinion that contradicted his opinion, he loved work and was fond of his knowledge. He had many plans for the future, and he was called upon to participate as a combat soldier in the Alexandroni Brigade, and he was very cool and worried about the soldiers around him. The position in Kfar Hess, but when he learned that he had remained wounded on the battlefield, he returned, and when he left the post he was hit by a bullet in his lungs – Beilinson Hospital, underwent surgery and died eight hours later on Wednesday, May 13, 1948 – one day before the declaration of independence. Chaim Emanuel was brought to rest in the cemetery in Tel Mond.
