Gur (Gursad), Giora
Giora, son of Rachel and Ariel, was born on May 22, 1952. He studied at the Sha’ar Hanegev elementary school in Kibbutz Gevim, continued his studies at the Hebrew Gymnasium in Rehavia in Jerusalem, Giora was a diligent student, loved by his teachers and accepted by his friends, he was a sports enthusiast and was especially enthusiastic about soccer, was a member of the Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed youth movement and was very fond of the country and its landscapes. he loved reading books of poetry and listening to pop music, a special affection for animals and especially for dogs, Giora was energetic, He has always been cheerful and optimistic, and he has always sought to fulfill all the tasks and challenges he has set for himself, seeking perfection and meticulous attention to every detail. Giora was drafted into the IDF in early October 1970 and assigned to the Ordnance Corps. After completing basic training, he took a course in electric car. During his first two years of service he made great efforts to transfer him to a combat unit or to send him to an officer’s course, but without success. His commanders refused to accept his request because he was essential in his position. A year before the war broke out, he was assigned to the armored patrol, a unit to which he was proud. The day before the Yom Kippur War broke out, he joined the ranks of those serving in the permanent army. His commander testifies in his opinion that he was “dedicated, responsible and disciplined, an energetic soldier, capable of any job, with excellent professional knowledge, a good soldier by all accounts.” During his military service, he made sure to write letters home to keep his parents from worrying. He also did not complain and did not say much about the arduous training. When the Yom Kippur War broke out he was sent with his unit to the front in the Golan Heights. On the 9th of Tishrei 5734 (9.10.1973), in the battle that took place in the region of Buqata, Giora was hit by enemy fire and killed on the spot. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery on Mount Herzl. Survived by father, mother, brother, and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to First Sergeant. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “Giora fulfilled his duties in a manner worthy of special commemoration while sacrificing his haert and soul.” His parents donated a Torah scroll to the synagogue on Kibbutz Mefalsim.
