Guggenheim, Avner (Henry)


Son of Roza and Heinrich was born on 23 November 1913 in southern Germany. In 1938 he immigrated to Israel and immediately joined the Haganah and the Kibbutz Mishmar HaDarom in Gan Yavne, and at the end of the 1938-1936 events, he kept in the orchards of the area. In 1939 he moved with his friends to Kibbutz Shamir and in the summer of 1942 – to Kibbutz Hazorea near Haifa. During World War II he was among the first volunteers to an artillery unit in the British Army to defend the coast and participated in a German submersible submarine that approached Haifa. He then served in Egypt, in Kirnaika, Aden, and towards the end of his service he joined the Jewish Brigade in Italy and Germany, where he remained in the office to search for missing relatives. At the end of the war he returned to Israel and worked in the vegetable garden of his kibbutz. At the beginning of the War of Independence, he had weapons in his kibbutz and later joined the Israel Defense Forces and served as an officer. Avner was sent to Jerusalem and on August 28, 1948 he fell during a tour of Deir Abu Tor. Avner was laid to rest in the cemetery at Kibbutz Hazorea.
