Grover, Abraham

Son of Frida and Yehuda, was born on June 23, 1910 in Vienna, the capital of Austria, and studied in a real school and a chemistry studio. He was an active member of the youth movement Ha – No’ar ha – Tsiyyoni in Vienna and Maccabi. In March 1932, the first “Maccabiah” was held in Israel, where Jewish athletes from around the world participated. Avraham came to Israel with the members of “Maccabi” Austria and settled in it. He worked as a guide in the Maccabee branch in Petah Tikva, as the Maccabee-Hatzair Center and the founder of the Magen David Adom branch. During his first years in Israel he worked as a chemist and later as a construction contractor. A few months after his immigration, he set himself up for Hagana service and in 1936 he enlisted in the first unit of guards in the Petah Tikva area and participated in all combat activities in the area. In 1939, the Haganah was appointed as a guide and shortly thereafter was ordained as the chief instructor of auxiliary weapons. Since then, the National Training Office has been instructed to conduct national courses for the commanders of the auxiliary weapons platoons. Many of the commanders of these platoons in the Palmach and the infantry brigade were his apprentices. In 1944 he was appointed commander of the southern district and two years later participated in the Yishuv struggle against the Mandate government. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he was taken from his home in Aharon, which he had just begun, to the position of planning and fortification officer in the Alexandroni Brigade. Since then he had spent days and nights building fortifications. After the failure of the attack on the Arab castle was sent to organize the defense of Kfar Hess. He recently served as an administrative officer in the Gad district. In his jeep, he would travel from one post to another, taking care of the fortifications. His approach to this action was bold and he was not deterred from going out to enemy territory and taking positions there. Avraham fell during a tour on the fifteenth of Av, 5708 (August 15, 1948), when he felt one of the outposts to move eastward, and the jeep he was traveling on took a landmine and was brought to rest in the military cemetery in Netanya.
