Gross, Aharon

Aharon, son of David and Gela-Gisela Gross, was born on November 24, 1924, in the city of Gyor, Hungary. He attended the Orthodox elementary school and completed the civil school as a private student. At the age of 14, he went to the Sopron Yeshiva and later to the Galanta Yeshiva. He returned to his parents’ home at the age of 18 and began to study tailoring in order to immigrate to Israel as a craftsman. In 1944, he was deported with all members of his community to the Auschwitz camp, where his parents and two younger brothers perished. Together with his older brother he joined the underground movement there. In the Auschwitz camp he learned to use a machine gun when the underground group obtained a quantity of weapons and prepared for the uprising. Aharon participated in the organization and implementation of the illegal immigration from Hungary on behalf of the Poalei Agudat Israel. Aharon immigrated to Israel legally in 1946. He settled in Jerusalem. He joined the Hagana in 1947 and on the day of the fall of the Etzion Bloc, Aharon enlisted in the IDF and was promoted to the rank of sergeant, participated in battles on the front of Mount Zion, Notre Dame and Beit Safafa. On 23 Kislev, 14.12.1949, a car Aharon was riding in went over a mine on the Bet-Guvrin-Har Tuv Road. He was brought to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
