Gromet, Elimelech (“Milk”)
Son of Sarah and Shimshon. He was born in 1925 in Rzeszow (Reisha), Poland. In 1933 he immigrated with his parents to Eretz Israel, and the family settled in Haifa. When Elimelech was 11 years old, he was orphaned from his mother. He attended the “Netzach Yisrael” school in the city, excelled in his studies and even “jumped” a class. He was a member of the Bnei Akiva youth movement, a modest, orderly and punctual boy, but also cheerful and loved by his friends. In the midst of the bloody riots of 1936-1939 he placed an explosive in the market in Haifa, lit the fuse, and when he ran away he fired his pistol at his pursuers. Elimelech was severely injured and taken to the hospital. Two days later, on 7 December 1937, he died of his wounds and was laid to rest in the Haifa cemetery, attended by hundreds of children – his friends, classmates, and members of Bnei Akiva – and his schoolmaster, Speedo. His death and history were recorded in the newspapers of the period.
