Greenberg, Leon
Son of Dora and Hanoch, was born on the 6th of Sivan 5626 (June 6, 1926) in the city of Schneberg, Saxony, Germany. In early 1947 he immigrated to Israel from Cyprus. In May, Leon was recruited to service and assigned to the newly established 7th brigade. The brigade’s first mission was to break through to Jerusalem and to conquer the Legion of Latrun, which cut off the road to the city. The first attack, which took place on the night of May 24-25, 1948, failed, and on the night of May 30-31, brigade forces attacked again. His battalion was assigned to occupy the legion posts in the area of the police and the monastery in Latrun. This attack also failed and in this battle Leon fell, on the 22nd of Iyar (May 31, 1948). On the 17th of Cheshvan 5706 (17.11.1949) he was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
