Greenbaum (Goren), Raphael-Zvi

Raphael-Zvi, son of Peretz (Paul) and Tzipora Greenbaum (Goren) was born on Yom Kippur in Munich, Germany in 1918. In 1935 the family immigrated to Israel. Immediately upon his arrival, he was clearly recognized for his ability to lead and he was recruited as a commander of a pickup truck, and later as an armored commander of Hanita and of the Ussishkin fortress. In March 1948, he was drafted into the IDF and served as commander and instructor in sabotage courses, and finally was appointed commander of the Tel Hai bloc. On 6 Shvat (February 2, 1952), together with a UN officer, he headed to the East Bank to search for three fishing friends who had not returned to the shore of Hulata the day before. This was done in accordance with an early agreement with the Syrians. As he approached the shore, fire opened on his boat. He was wounded and on the way to the hospital died of his wounds. He was put to rest at the cemetery in Hulata.
