Yoel was an excellent athlete, and devoted a lot of time to physical activity. After completing his studies at the school, he left for Kibbutz Sdot Yam, where he remained attached to his youth and worked on a voluntary basis until he was drafted into the IDF. Yoel was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in February 1969 and served in a combat unit and was assigned to the Armored Corps, after which he was trained as a tank driver and was successfully sent to serve in the tank brigade of the Seven Brigade in Sinai. He was a good professional, with a lot of initiative and resourcefulness, and as a commander he knew how to be a member of his subordinates and to solve their problems.
