Gottlieb, Amikam


Amikam (Ami), son of Yaffa and Yehuda, was born on March 3, 1948 in Tel Aviv and studied at the Remez elementary school in Kiryat Shalom in Tel Aviv. He continued his high school studies at the “Shevach” vocational school in Tel Aviv and received a diploma as a qualified electrician. Throughout the years he was an active member of the united movement and his friends remember him as a nice guy, honest, noble-minded, pleasant and dedicated to movement and friends. Amikam was drafted into the IDF in early 1965 and after completing a series of courses at the Armored Corps School, was stationed in one of the Armored Corps units as tank tankers, a good and devoted soldier who volunteered for every position and fought with courage and infinite dedication in some of the difficult battles of the Six-Day War and of War of Attrition. After graduating from compulsory military service, Ami returned to the school of technicians. He studied electronics for three years and then got a job at Israel Aircraft Industries. He intended to continue working until he saved enough money to continue his studies at the Technion. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, he was stationed in his unit and sent with an armored force south of Sinai. He participated in the battles of containment and break-up against the Egyptians and fulfilled his duties with courage and sacrifice. On the day of Simchat Torah, October 18, 1973, Ami was sent to repair a tank that had been stuck on one of the bridges, at the time of the break-through of the Suez Canal. Under heavy bombardment, he tried to repair the damaged vehicle until he himself was hit and killed on the spot. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. Survived by a wife and daughter, parents, sister and two brothers. His daughter, who was born two months after he fell, is named after him – Bat Ami. After his fall, he was promoted to sergeant.
