Gottlieb, Akiva
Akiva, son of Chaya-Binah and Chaim Gottlieb was born in 1927 in Jerusalem to a Hasidic family and received a traditional education in Talmud Torah. When he grew up, he learned the diamond polishing job and later worked as a plumber in a private workshop. He was a member of the Hagana for six years and underwent training in various weapons. And with the outbreak of the War of Independence was among the defenders of the city, guarding it on the border of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. He would go out at night to guard the Mandelbaum House, take part in repelling the attack on the Meah Shearim neighborhood and work in fortifications in many places in Jerusalem. He worked in the defense of the Old City, where he also worked on fortifications near enemy lines. He was loved by his comrades-in-arms and commanders for his honesty and loyalty to the job. On the 11th of Tevet 5709 (12.1.1949), while guarding, he picked up a hand grenade concealed in a box thrown by the Arabs. The grenade exploded and Akiva was killed. He was brought to rest in the cemetery in Sheikh Bader B.
