Gorodiski, Ozer

Ozer, son of Rachel and Baruch Gorodiski, was born in 1907 in the city of Novogrudek, Poland, in a Zionist and traditionalist home. In 1931 he immigrated to Eretz Israel and worked in Kibbutz Be’er Yaakov. After a short time the kibbutz fell apart and he began to work as a construction worker in Tel Aviv. After that he moved to Rehovot and worked as a guard at Pardes until the outbreak of the Second World War. At the beginning of the war he moved to Jerusalem (after the liquidation of the factory in which he worked in Rehovot) and worked in various jobs (including the “Solel Boneh”). Ozer enlisted in the British army and served there for five years. After his discharge from the army, he worked at the Froumine biscuit factory in Jerusalem and was a member of the workers’ committee. With the outbreak of the War of Independence he joined the army and fulfilled his duties with dedication and responsibility. He was about to be released from the army because of his age and marital status (a wife and two children), but on the 2nd of Tishrei 5709 (October 5, 1948) he fell defending the Past Hotel in Jerusalem. On 17 Elul, (30.8.1950), Ozer was transferred to eternal rest in the military cemetery at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
