Goodes, Shraga (Feivel)

Son of Henia and Shimon, was born in 1912 in the small town of Piesk near Volkovisk, Poland. While we were soft in the days, his mother died; The seven orphans were educated and raised by his father, who did not have a second wife. This education without a mother was a difficult reality, but it made the boy stronger in body and soul. After serving in the Polish army he went to a training kibbutz on the edge of the Neiman and in 1935 immigrated to Eretz Israel. The next day he had already left for work – filling gravel trucks. His pains to adapt to the hard work and the new land were difficult, but he accepted everything with love and joy. A man of work was from his youth and he found great satisfaction, and especially found happiness in being in Israel. After several hard years of work, he acquired his own truck and joined the “Baywatch” cooperative. At the outbreak of the War of Independence he would travel without fear in every hour of danger and wherever the emergency order demanded of him. Once, when he went out with the army to Ramat Yohanan, he answered simply and honestly to his wife, who tried to discourage him from this dangerous trip: “We are fighting for our freedom and if every citizen does not want to help, we will not win.” On the 22nd of Nisan 5708 (22.4.1948), the day of the conquest of Haifa, he and his co-worker, Ze’ev Payne, set out to fix a car that had been damaged during a ride on Mount Carmel. The battle took place between the Arab Legion and the Haganah, and he and his friend took part in this battle and near Kfar Hassidim they both found their deaths and kissed them.
