Golub, Eliyahu (Eli)


Was born on 8 January 1930 in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, and in 1934 he immigrated to Israel with a sailboat and was accepted to the Kiryat Motzkin school and completed the elementary school in Haifa at the age of 15. He joined the “Hashomer Hatzair” youth movement and Gadna, and was an enthusiastic athlete in various sports: swimming, basketball and boxing. He was a member of Hapoel. In 1946 he moved to the western city of Kiryat Haim. In December 1947 he joined the Carmeli Brigade and completed a sabotage course in Atlit. He participated in operations in the Western Galilee, in the Yehiam convoy, in the conquest of Acre and Nazareth, in the battle for Jenin, and more. On the 19th of Tammuz 5708 (19.7.1948), he fell in battle for Tarshiha and was brought to rest at the military cemetery in Nahariya. A year after his fall, Hapoel founded the Magen Golub basketball championship in his name.
