Goldstein, Peretz

Son of Rachel and Yosef Dov. He was a quiet boy and a diligent student and at a young age he joined a youth movement, studied Hebrew and soon became prominent among its activists. He was educated in the town of Marish-Leshos in Transylvania, Especially in the intellectual and cultural fields, but he prepared himself to prepare for immigration to Eretz Israel, but in the meantime the Second World War broke out and the roads to Eretz Israel were blocked, and in 1940 he was able to reach Eretz Israel with his friends and were sent to a youth group in Kibbutz Afikim. In December 1942 he joined the ranks of the Palmach and later volunteered to be part of the group Friends who were preparing for a special mission behind the Nazi enemy lines. The main purpose of the mission is to reach out to the Jews of Slovakia and to assist them in whatever is necessary. In April 1944, after a strenuous training period, he flew from Cairo to Italy and on the 13th of the same month he fell with Yoel Palgi, in Yugoslavia, and fought among the partisans. At that time he sought contact with Jews at the risk of his life and offered help to those in need. In June 1944 he moved to Hungary. After Palgi’s arrest, Peretz escaped and hid in a camp of Jews who were to be sent to Spain as a rescue effort. He discovered that this camp also had parents who were about to leave Hungary on their way to Eretz Israel. After much deliberation and fear, he became acquainted with them and then parted from them with a heavy Lev. According to the plan, he had to leave Hungary together with the Jews of the camp, but out of fear for the fate of his paratroopers who were imprisoned, he chose to remain in order to try to release them in some way, including organizing an attack on the prison. But all the plans failed. In July, Peretz was arrested and interrogated by the Hungarian and German authorities. With the approach of the Red Army, he was exiled to Germany and on December 18 he was last seen in Oranienburg. He was apparently killed in a concentration camp on the 16th of Adar 5705 (March 1, 1945). Laid master. In a letter of condolence sent to the parents, Dr. Dov Yosef, of the Jewish Agency administration, wrote: “Peretz’s character symbolizes the heroism of Israel and its aspirations for a free life. The eternal soul of the people will be included in the legend of Peretz’s exploits, the greatness of his life and the victory of his death. “He was immortalized in the books” Secret Shield “and” The History of the Haganah “and his memorial was erected in the cemetery on Mount Herzl.
