Goldstein, Mordechai (Tuvia)

Son of Sarah and Dov, he was born on 27.12.1926 in the Neve Shalom neighborhood of Jaffa. He studied at the Tachkemoni School and was active in the Religious Scouts. Mordechai Tuvia completed his studies at the vocational school “Montefiore” as a metalworker and engraver and excelled in technical drawing. He devoted himself to drawing plans and wanted to learn flying. Among his many acquaintances he was known as a man of good manners and firm character. He joined the Haganah as a youth, and immediately after the UN General Assembly resolution he volunteered for active duty, accompanied by convoys to Nitzanim in the Negev and battles with the local Arabs, and his desire to avenge the blood of his brother Abraham, killed during the 1936 riots. He also participated in transporting supplies to the Arava and Haliham. He is known by his acquaintances as “the brave Motke”. At the end of the day, on the morning of the first day of our independence, on 6 Iyar, 15 May 1948, he served in the position of commander of the Air Force at the Dov airport in north Tel Aviv. He expressed his enthusiasm for the revival of the state and was hopeful that the Jewish people would rise and succeed. On the same day, when he was on duty at the airport, he was wounded in the first Egyptian bombardment and was burned.. Only after being identified by his family was he laid to rest in the Nahalat Yitzhak Military Cemetery.
