Goldschmidt, Avner


Avner, son of Hannah and Uri, was born on November 21, 1943, in Hulata. He studied at the elementary school in Hulata and then went on to study at the local high school. He also studied for one year at Tel-Aviv College. Avner was drafted into the IDF in mid-November 1962 and assigned to the Armored Corps. Avner quickly turned the department into an excellent armored force. In 1973 he was appointed deputy commander of a tank battalion and promoted to the rank of major. During the Yom Kippur War, his unit participated in the battles against the Syrians in the Golan Heights. Avner, as battalion commander, was responsible for organizing the battalion and preparing it for battle, and after completing preparations he mounted a tank and headed for the battle on October 7, 1973. In the battle of Katsia, Avner’s tank was hit and he was killed.
