Goldblatt, Zvi


Zvi, son of Rachel and Shmuel Goldblatt, was born on March 16, 1909 in the city of Lancet, Poland. Zvi began to study shoemaking and at age 13, was already supporting his large family. In 1934 he immigrated to Israel. Zvi founded the Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael branch in his city and organized the Hehalutz organization in the area. With the same enthusiasm and dedication he joined the Haganah, encouraged many of his friends to join.
At the outbreak of the War of Independence, Zvi volunteered to guard the Jaffa-Tel Aviv border, enlisted a full conscription and was sent to Jerusalem. He participated in the battles for Abu Tur, Katamon and Mount Zion, and fell on the 15th of Tishrai, October 18, 1948 in Deir Abu Tor from the bullet of an Arab sniper. He was 40 years old. Zvi was laid to rest at the Nahalat Yitzhak Military Cemetery. He was survived by a wife and two children.
