Godel, George
Son of Carol and Edna. Born on the 25th of Av, August 30, 1948 in the city of Cluj, Romania. The family immigrated to Israel in 1959. He attended elementary school in Ashkelon and then at the naval officers’ school in Acco. As part of the naval officers’ school, he was active in sports and an avid photography enthusiast. He loved reading, especially books on shipbuilding. He enjoyed music, especially classical music. In September 1966, he enlisted in the IDF, and volunteered for the Navy, where he served in the Eilat Air Force. He was later transferred to the “Yaffo” organization, and participated in the search for the submarine “Dakar.” On 29th of Tishrei, October 21, 1968, when his ship sailed, the ship was sunk by enemy ships. There was a memorial at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. His name was commemorated by marking his name on the holster of a Torah scroll in the Tifereth Israel Synagogue, and on a marble slab in the central synagogue in Nahariya.
