Gis, Yitzhak

Gis, Yitzhak

Son of Georgia and Nazem, was born on September 29, 1955, in Or Yehuda, a third son to his parents. Itzik was a plump, smiling child. His going to kindergarten was a sad event for him, because he was separated from his beloved mother. But his integration there was quick, when he discovered the pleasure of fulfilling roles and assuming responsibility. He studied at the Amram Gaon State Religious School in Or Yehuda, and was absorbed with the same ease and curiosity of knowledge in the humanities and exact sciences. In the summer of 1973, Yitzhak was drafted into the IDF. Three months later, the Yom Kippur War broke out, and he participated in the Sinai Campaign. He was appointed as a service man, but he was not satisfied with his position, and after his efforts he moved to a combat unit. He wanted to be a front-line fighter, and when he did, he was thrilled and contented. After his release from the army, he began distributing books among the residents of Or Yehuda. He was a book lover and found a job that was close to his heart. Two months after the Peace for Galilee War broke out, he decided to volunteer and served in the town of Ali for a week. He was an armament man, and he did hard work wherever and whenever it was needed. On the 11th of Av 5742 (31.7.1982), on his return from a patrol, he was struck by terrorists who were waiting in an ambush and he was killed on the spot. His friends and commanders in the army noted his main qualities: a model soldier, disciplined, doing his job perfectly, responsibly and courageously. A devoted friend, loved by everyone and able to elevate their spirits in times of crisis. Has a sense of humor and natural grace. In his work he served as a personal example to all members of his unit in the unit. After his death, Itzik was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He was 27 years old. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. He left behind his parents and five brothers and sisters.
