Giron, Yaakov


Son of Dalia and Itzhak, Yaakov (Kobi) was born in Kfar Saba on February 23, 1953. Yaakov was drafted into the IDF in early February 1972 and assigned to the Armored Corps. After finishing basic training and completing a course in the Patton tank professions and finishing with a high grade, he was placed as a liaison officer in a tank battalion in the Sinai. After a while he took part in a course for tank commanders and was assigned to a training base as a guide for armored corps recruits. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, Kobi was placed as a noncom in the Armored Corps in the Sinai, and immediately after arriving at the unit, he organized a tank crew and was discovered to be an excellent professional, and the tank crew under his command destroyed many enemy combat vehicles. On October 16, 1973, during one of the battles at the Chinese Farm in the central sector of the Suez Canal, Kobi was shot and killed while standing in a turret. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. Survived by his parents, brother and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to First Sergeant.
