Giladi (Meidnik) Zvi


The son of Haim and Chava. He was born on July 3, 1928 in the city of Seltin in Romania. With the outbreak of World War, after the Romanians returned and recaptured Bukovina, the entire family was deported to Transdnistria.
Finally in 1944 he immigrated to Israel as part of the Youth Aliya. He was a member of the Hanoar Haoved movement, and took the course of a squad commander. His nucleus was assigned to guard the group of “Hachushalim”, whose members were hiding from the British at the time. During the War of Independence he returned home and began to work devotedly in fortifying the points. He also took part in every military operation to which the members of the group were called: He was among the pioneers of the Galilee and was wounded in the defense of Ayelet Hashachar. Upon completion of hostilities in the Galilee, his mother was to immigrate to Israel and he received a year’s leave from the group for this purpose. Three months before his mother’s arrival, he was drafted into the IDF. When his mother was flown to Eilat and he saw her for only two hours. On the 20th of Elul 5710 (September 2, 1950), his class left for night training and encountered a problem. He was caught in an Egyptian ambush where Zvi fell along with three of his friends. He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
