Giladi, Benyamin (Benny)

Son of Ayala and Meshulam was born on 19.12.1928 in Jerusalem. After the end of the War of Independence, he participated in the defense of Ein Zeitim and the attack on Ein Zeitun, and later joined the army. He accompanied the convoys to Jerusalem and the base of his battalion in Hulda, and participated in the battles of Sheikh Jarrah, Katamon, Deir Abu Tur, Shu’fat, Beit Safafa, Mar Elias, Radar, Deir Ayyub. On the night of June 8-9, 1948, he went with his battalion to the “Yoram” operation – the third attack on Latrun. Because of a mistake in navigating, the battalion was on the 14th deck, instead of the thirteenth position as planned. The fighters attacked the outpost and succeeded in capturing part of it, and during the fierce battle many of them were injured. The enemy’s resistance was fierce, and due to the casualties, there was no power to complete the conquest of the outpost and an order was given to withdraw. On this day, on the 2nd of Sivan 5708 (9.6.1948), he died and was taken to the military cemetery at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem on 17 November 1949.
