Gil, Shmuel (Sammy)


Son of Dudu and David, was born in 1931 in Turkey. Shmuel completed eight years of study in his native country and in 1949, when he was 18 years old, immigrated to Israel. Shortly after he immigrated to Israel in October 1949, Shmuel enlisted in the IDF and served in the Infantry Corps, where he underwent several basic training and professional courses, and Shmuel was promoted to corporal. He married and built his home in the area near Tel Aviv, and Shmuel fought in all of Israel’s wars since he joined the IDF. He served as a machine gunner in the Sinai Campaign, the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War. After the Yom Kippur War, the IDF established a committee that dealt with the recruitment of reservists, who were over forty, to the career army, and in light of his past excellence in reserve service, the committee approved his acceptance into the regular army in December 1974. On the 21st of Nissan 5741 (24.4.1981) Shmuel fell in the line of duty. He was 50 years old when he died. Shmuel was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Holon. He left behind a wife, two sons and three daughters.
