Gil (Gildenhorn), Yaakov (“Babatzi”)


Son of Nathan and Shulamit. He was born on the 20th of October 1918 in the city of Polynia, Ukraine. Immigrated to Israel in the 1930s, served as a teacher and continued his studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, he traveled to Poland to visit his parents, but because of the war that broke out he was stuck and remained there. in 1946 he arrived back in Israel, He came to Jerusalem, started working and joined the defenders’ camp. Until the end of the War of Independence, he became an officer in the IDF (with the rank of lieutenant) and served as a quartermaster until the day of the 12th of Tevet 5710 (January 1, 1950) About a year and a half later, on the 17th of Sivan 5761 (21.6.1951), he fell in the line of duty. Was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, where he left a pregnant wife, Simcha Sima and son- Natan.
