Avner (Avik), son of Esther and Ben-Zion, a survivor of the Auschwitz and Dachau death camps, was born on February 14, 1952, in Jerusalem. He studied at the “Ma’aleh” elementary school and at the Himmelfarb High School and prepared to study geography and archeology at the university. Avner was a very talented student and studied in a class of gifted students. He read many books and articles in various fields, loved poetry and knew many songs by heart. As a student he was one of the members of the Scout movement in Jerusalem and later became a teacher and later a center of the “Masuot” tribe. When he immigrated with his friends to Ramat Magshimim he became the nuclear center. He was a sports fan, a member of the “Elitzur” association, an avid basketball player, participated in various races and many documents attest to his achievements. He had many hobbies for Avner. He had collections of stamps, coins, and symbols. He built matches with a string of colorful strings and a copper embossed background. He liked to travel throughout the country, especially in the Old City of Jerusalem, and often take pictures of his sights, landscapes and antiquities sites. He had a talent for acting and he composed plays, and even appeared in various sections of the game and in musical instruments with a harmonica before his friends in school and in the youth movement. He had a pleasant voice and a dinner. He was thirteen years old when he was appointed by the gabbai of the synagogue in Talbieh to be a gabai during the High Holy Days and continued until he joined the army. Avner was very sociable and friendly to all his acquaintances, friendly, person-loving, patient, lenient and forgiving, moving away from quarrels and strife and working on peacemaking among his friends. He was naturally cheerful, with a sense of humor and was fond of joking. He was candid, honest and conscientious. And everyone remembers him as a modest person who moves away from arrogance, loves simplicity and is happy with his part. Avner was drafted into the IDF at the end of July 1970 and volunteered for the paratroop brigade, within the framework of the “Eitan” nucleus, which was about to move to Ramat Magshimim. He completed his basic training as an outstanding apprentice. After completing basic training, he completed a training course in a parachuting course, an infantry commander course, and an infantry officer course, in which he was a good soldier and an excellent officer. When war broke out, Avner was sent with his unit to the front in the Sinai, and on the 23rd of Tishrei 5734 (19.10.1973), after a difficult battle in the central sector, Katyushas opened fire on him and some of his subordinates managed to hide in one of the bunkers and were saved, and until he and his handful of soldiers sought shelter, a shell hit them and he was killed on the spot. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery on Mount Herzl. He left behind a wife, father, mother and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to lieutenant.
