Ghetto, Yosef

Yosef, son of Tova and Ovadia, was born on April 4, 1951, in Haifa. In his first years he lived in the village of Shomera, and then returned with his parents to the city of Haifa. He completed his elementary studies at the “Meginim” elementary school in Kiryat Haim, and after graduating began working as an apprentice in the carpentry profession. After a while he wanted to move to the kibbutz, and in January 1967 he came to Kibbutz Yifat. He worked in the orchard and loved his work, and at the same time continued his studies. After three years of living in the farm, Yosef left Yifat after his beloved instructor was killed in a plane crash. He returned to Haifa to his parents’ home, and after a brief period of hesitation about his future, he decided to work in the territories beyond the “Green Line”, viewing it as a personal challenge and an act of importance to the state. He joined companies that worked in the territories and in his work reached the Golan Heights, Sinai and Sharm el-Sheikh. During this period he seldom came to his parents’ home, but he made sure to write and, most importantly, to call home to keep his family posted. Yossi, as his family and friends called him, was a member of the Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed movement and was loved by all his teammates. He has devoted a great deal of time to sports such as football, athletics, swimming and distance running. His favorite hobby in sport was judo and high jump. Yossi loved mathematics and algebra, and excelled in these subjects. He also liked to read history books and the knowledge he acquired from these books helped him in policy debates between his friends in the youth movement, in his home or in his “neighborhood.” He had a great fondness for nature-landscapes, flora, and open air. In his youth, Yossi was especially well-known for his captivating beauty. His large blue eyes, which were adorned with long black lashes, appealed to everyone he saw. He became the favorite of all the residents of Shomera, the Border Police and the many visitors to the village. He was playful and spoiled and full of joy, which accompanied him even in his youth. He was a dedicated and faithful son, and he loved his mother with a strong love. In his neighborhood in Haifa, he received great esteem, love and admiration from his neighbors and friends. Thanks to his cleverness and wisdom of life, he became a central figure in his company and among his friends. His aspiration for the future was to go out to the sea and explore the world like his uncles who were sailors. He was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in July 1973 and assigned to the Artillery Corps, and after completing his basic training, he was stationed in an artillery unit, during which time he maintained constant contact with his parents’ home, to call and write, so as not to worry his family. Joseph participated in the battles of containment and incursion against the Syrians in the Golan Heights On October 12, 1973, during the battle that took place at Tel-Shams, he was hit by shelling and was killed and brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Haifa , And after his death he was promoted to the rank of corporal … In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “Among the soldiers of the course A small, shy, smiling soldier whose great ambition was to realize the alert, to rise to the level and prove to the Syrians our strength … I think ghetto was the youngest soldier in the course in terms of age, but older than many in terms of ambition … “A short, medium build, upright and proud walking as befitting a self-confident person. His features are handsome, with a lot of kindness and gentleness, the smile so suited to his energetic personality. Always the same encouraging smile. You can see it – and it’s impossible not to draw the courage and move on. And the eyes – in my opinion, the most prominent thing in his external personality. Those blue eyes, as deep as the sea, that look streht at you . With these pretty eyes you can read a lot about Joseph’s personality. On the merry side, the playfulness and the sharpness of thought, on the side of purity and kindness, is a harsh attempt to deal with evil and uproot its roots … “His parents published a pamphlet in his memory containing friends’
