Georgie-Holmes, Avraham


Avraham, son of Masouda and Salah Georgie-Holmes, of the Hanjal family known in Baghdad, was born on June 4, 1899 in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq and immigrated to Israel in 1921. All his life he worked honestly and faithfully to support his household. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he was drafted again, this time to the Jerusalem Brigade, as a soldier in the service of transporting fuel. On the day of the second truce, on the 11th of Tammuz 5708 (18.7.1948), he fell during the bombardment of Jerusalem while on active duty. He was buried in Sheikh Bader A. Four months before that date, his eldest son fell in battle. On the 28th of Elul 5710 (10.9.1950) he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
