Gantz, Meir


Son of Sarah and Joseph, was born on March 5, 1929 in the city of Warsaw, Romania, and attended an elementary school. When the German invasion of this territory during the Second World War was taken to forced labor in concentration camps. His strong body stood in all his trials and he survived. After the liberation he stayed in a DP camp in Bergen-Belsen and waited for his immigration. In the meantime, he prepared himself for a working life in a training group in Dusseldorf. He worked as a baker and in this profession he also worked in Israel since his immigration in 1947. While still in the camp with She’erith Hapleitah, the Haganah practiced basic training. He settled in Petach Tikvah and from there joined the ranks of the defenders. He participated in the battles in Hartuv, Neve Ya’akov, the Tzuba quarry and escorting convoys. After his transfer to the Alexandroni Brigade, he served in a religious company, fought in the “Triangle” and recently in the Negev. During Operation Horev, a “liquidation” operation was carried out against the “Faluja pocket,” in which an Egyptian brigade was besieged. The attack took place on the eastern flank of the “pocket” in the area of ​​Iraq al-Manshiyya. The Alexandroni forces broke into the village from the south and took over part of it, but their assault on the hill north of the village was repulsed. Meanwhile, the Egyptians recovered and attacked and forced our forces to withdraw. Part of the force was captured in the village. In this battle he fell on the 28th of Kislev 5709 (December 28, 1948) and was buried in Faluja. On the 17th of Kislev 5710 (8.12.1949) he was laid to rest in the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
