Ganish, Yosef
Son of Mahbouba and Rafal, was born in 1929 in Tripoli, the capital of Libya. In his city he graduated from elementary school and was a typist by trade. When he was young, he volunteered for the Haganah, which was established in the underground in his city. When he was 17, he left the house and together with 15 of his friends left on foot on their way to Israel. After crossing 120 kilometers on foot, they were caught by Arabs before they reached the Tunisian border, and ten of the group handed over their money to their captors and continued on their way, and some of them returned, and when they reached the Tunisian border they were caught by the French police and placed in prison. With the help of the Jewish community in Tunis, they were released and remained there for about a year, and finally they received French documents and passports, moved to Algeria, and from there to Marseilles, where they underwent military training in preparation for immigration to Israel, and in 1948 they joined the campaign for Israel’s independence. In a road accident on the way to Hadera, he was taken to a hospital and died after being killed Ah Day, Independence day sixteenth of Tammuz (23/07/1948). Joseph was laid-rest at the military cemetery in Nahalat Yitzhak.
