Gadi’el, Israel


Son of Itka and Max, was born on September 28, 1910 in the city of Campen, Germany. In 1942 he immigrated to Israel and settled in Jerusalem. Israel began working at Atara cafe and due to his dedication to work, he was appointed as the employee. At the beginning of the battles of the War of Independence in Jerusalem he came to the ranks of the defenders and filled various guard positions in the defense of Hebrew Jerusalem. On the 22nd of Adar 5708 (February 22, 1948), a convoy carrying an armored vehicle and three British military trucks arrived at son of Yehuda Street in Jerusalem. The trucks, driven by British deserters, were parked in the street and their drivers drove off by car. The trucks, loaded with hundreds of kilograms of explosives, exploded at 6:30. Four houses collapsed and four others collapsed, causing many casualties. During the day there was an exchange of fire with British soldiers. Israel was then nearby, shot by them and fell into a void. He was brought to rest in the cemetery in Sanhedria.
