Friedmann, Jacob


Born in 1926 in the city of Sopron, Hungary. In 1946, at the age of 20, he immigrated to Israel, the sole remnant of his extensive family, who was exterminated in the concentration camps. He was a tailor by profession. He settled in Jerusalem and joined the Haganah. Jacob did not find work in his profession and did not have a relative in the country. At the outbreak of the War of Independence he joined the fighters in the Jerusalem Brigade. Among the escorts was a convoy to Atarot on the 13th of Adar II (March 24, 1948) and fell in battle with an Arab mob attacking the convoy near Shuafat. He was buried in Sanhedria in Jerusalem. On the 26th of Elul 5711 (26.9.1951) he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem
