Friedman, Shmuel

Son of Aharon was born in 1927 in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. His studies at the school were interrupted due to the war, the occupation of Poland by the Germans and the Holocaust. Shmuel went through the horrors of the ghetto and found shelter in the home of a Christian Pole, a Communist, who was connected to his parents’ house by friendly ties originating from a conceptual fraternity. Upon the liberation of the city he joined the Red Army and took part in the war campaigns until the final victory over the Germans. He joined Dror, a kibbutz of ghetto fighters, and prepared for Aliyah. He arrived on an illegal immigrant ship whose passengers were held for a year on the island of Cyprus, which served as a pioneering training station. Shmuel arrived in Israel after the outbreak of the War of Independence in 1948. He immediately joined the Palmach and served in the Harel Brigade, was a quiet and gentle man who played the clarinet, participated in all his unit activities and fell in combat during Operation Horev The Egyptian from within the borders of Israel, at the Rafah outpost, on the 6th of Tevet 5709 (7.1.1949). He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Haifa.
