Freund (Avieli), Eliezer


Son of Shulamit and Shlomo. He was born on January 4, 1962 in Yavne’el. His father was a veterinarian and worked in the settlements of the Jordan Valley and later in the Tel Aviv area. Eli attended the Mikveh Israel Agricultural School, the Ben Shemen Youth Village and the Shalva High School in Tel Aviv. Before completing his matriculation exams, he volunteered for the Hebrew Settlements Police and served in Ramat Hachayanim and Ramot Hashofet. He was tall, handsome and kind. In May 1942, he enlisted in the British Transport Corps and served in the Western Desert. When preparations were made for the invasion of Italy, his unit was attached to the force that was about to invade Sicily. On July 14, 1943, on the journey to the invasion coast, he was hit by German aircraft attacks on the landing ships. He was evacuated to a field hospital in Syracuse and on 17 July 1943 he died of his wounds. He was laid to rest in a British military cemetery in Siracusa, Sicily, leaving parents and sister. In his memory a forest was planted in the Wingate Forest.
