Frannie, Shlomo (Shani)
Son of Leah (Irene) and Yom Tov (Goza), was born on September 4, 1930 in the city of Timisoara, Romania, and attended a Jewish elementary school in Romania. In November 1940, at the age of 10, he immigrated to Israel. He graduated from the “Tel Nordoi” elementary school and two classes at the Tel Aviv Municipal Gymnasium and moved to Kadouri Agricultural School. When the War of Independence broke out he stopped his studies. “The young people are on the battlefield,” he said, “how can I look at people if I do not give up? Shlomo joined the Yiftah Brigade. He wanted to be in touch, went through a wireless course and filled difficult positions. He fought in the Ramle-Lod front and on the way to the Negev. As a lover of land and animals, the destruction that followed the war hurt him. In the battles of Lod he untied the animals that the Arabs had tied to save them, and watered the old Arabs. Was a responsible soldier, as the testimony of his commander. Giving in to others and taking care of himself. His demands were minimal and his military salary would have been sent home. Participated in the “Yoav” operation to break through the Negev. His company attacked one of the Julikat authorities, but in the face of heavy fire had to retreat. Shlomo was hit by a bullet during the withdrawal, on the 15th of Tishrei, 5709 (October 18, 1948). He was buried in a mass grave in Dorot. On the 17th of Iyar 5709 (4.5.1950) he was transferred to the eternal rest of the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
