Fox, Raphael (Foxy)


Raphael Fox was born on the 10th of Cheshvan, November 1, 1922 in the city of Herrena, Germany, and studied at the Jewish high school in the city of Breslau. With the Nazis’ rise to power the family began to wander throughout Europe: Czechoslovakia, Austria and Yugoslavia.They stayed in Zagreb for about eight months, studying there at the Jewish school. On February 28, 1936, he immigrated with his parents to Israel settling in Haifa. Raphael began studying frameworks. In the meantime, the bloody riots broke out between 1936-1939. He stopped his studies and joined the Hagana. For about two years he worked in a pharmacy and then in the editorial board of the journal HaYoman. In 1941, he was hired in a British military camp in Kiryat Haim and was a member of the workers’ committee. He was also a member of Hapoel. As a member of the Haganah, he automatically moved to the army. On November 30, 1947, the day after the United Nations General Assembly decided to partition the country, he served as a guard in Haifa and participated in battles in the city, serving in one of the Carmeli Brigade battalions and taking part in fierce battles. Raphael fell on the way to Manara on the 19th day of Tishrei, October 22, 1948. His body was found three weeks later and brought to rest at the military cemetery in Rosh Pina.
