Flesch, Thomas (Dov) (“Tommy”)


Son of Meir-Aryeh (Yatsvan) and Shoshana. He was born on 20.1.1936 in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Immigrated to Israel in 1949. He studied in an elementary school in his hometown and after his cost continued his studies at the Ginniger School. He was a tractor operator. In December 1953 he was drafted into the IDF and after completing his mandatory service, he continued to serve in the regular army and reached the rank of deputy, and on the eve of Memorial Day, a special broadcast was broadcast on Kol Israel, entitled “In Their Lives and Death”. In the framework of this broadcast, one of his commanders, who knew Tomas during his civil life before his enlistment and even lived with him in the field about ten months before the Sinai Campaign, told him how impressed he was by his personality and his behavior: he was silent and closed; he did not participate in arguments, for he was not a man of things but a man Action and action. After he was appointed platoon commander, he lived with his men day and night and was the first to encourage them and he helped and he took care of his soldiers and their needs. While he was participating in the Sinai Campaign, his commander appreciated him; Tomas did not talk much and did not ask questions on the radio how to act and what to do; His commander was convinced that he knew what he had before him and trusted him. In the battle of Abu-Agila, Thomas left with his platoon and the fire of hell opened on him from the enemy, but when they were found a few hundred meters from the fences of the tank in which Thomas was sitting – and so he died on the 27th of Mershvan 5711 (1/11/1956) . He was buried in the Shalhal Emergency Military Cemetery and transferred to eternal rest in the Kiryat Shaul Military Cemetery on the 11th of Marhash 5718 (6.11.1957). After his death he was promoted to lieutenant.
