Fishbein, Joseph

Son of Chaya and Jacob, was born on October 30, 1926, in the city of Leipzig, Germany. In time, before the most severe decrees, he managed to move to England, where he completed his education and deepened his Zionist feeling. During the Second World War he served in the British Army. He participated in the Italian system and was transferred at his request to the Jewish Brigade. Bought friends among his comrades-in-arms from the Land of Israel, and it was agreed that upon completion of his service, he would also immigrate to Israel and be one of them. With the dismantling of the Brigade he returned to the British Army and was attached to the British occupation forces in Germany. He served in the Intelligence and was very active in Zionist affairs, together with his two friends Dov Katz and Ziggy Steller, all three members of the Habonim youth movement. Was a responsible and stable guy, cheerful and optimistic. Upon his release from the British army he liquidated his affairs in the Diaspora and immigrated to Israel. He enlisted in the service and was offered – as well as his friend Siggy Steller – training work, but they refused and preferred to be simple fighters in a combat unit in the Givati Brigade. He participated in the battles and fell in battle with his friend Siggy on Tuesday, June 10, 1948. His unit clung to Hill 69, east of the coastal road, to block the movement of the Egyptians there, and was captured on 8 June 1948. The Egyptians launched a heavy bombardment of the outpost, and then infantry forces attacked it with armored vehicles, causing enemy casualties, the collapse of the positions and the damage to the weapons. Elul 5710 (August 31, 1950) was brought to rest in the Nahalat Yitzhak Military Cemetery.
