Fender, Yair (Helmut)

Yair (Helmut), son of Kata and Heinz Fender, was born on January 9, 1922 in Berlin, Germany, and studied in a high school in Berlin. He immigrated to Israel in 1938. During the Youth Aliya, his parents, who remained in Germany, were murdered by the Nazis. Although he did not receive special army training, he served briefly as a guard and then joined the British army and fought until the end of the war, and upon his return he returned to Israel and worked as a clerk. He served in the 7th Brigade and participated in Operation son of-Nun B – the second attack on the Legion in Latrun in an attempt to break through the road to Jerusalem. The soldiers were forced to retreat, and on that day he fell, on the 22nd of Iyar 5708 (May 31, 1948), leaving a wife Rachel. On 28.2.1950, Yair was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
