From his hobby and continued to travel in Israel during his vacations. He also managed to help his friends and students in their studies. In June 1980, Gil was accepted to graduate studies at Tel Aviv University, after receiving approval from his superiors in the IDF. In September 1980 he took a short vacation and was saved for a visit to Mitzpeh Ramon. On September 19, 1980, Gil was about to return to his base. He left Mitzpeh Ramon at dawn from a civilian jeep, and on the way, on the Mashabei Sadeh-Ketziot road, the jeep collided with a civilian truck. Gil was killed in the accident. He was 22 years old when he died.
