Farkash, Meir

Son of Rachel and Abraham, was born on August 13, 1828 in Carpatho-Rus, Czechoslovakia. During World War II, he was still a child, uprooted from his parents’ arms and exiled to the concentration and extermination camps in Auschwitz and worked there for three years. His chest foreshadowed all the torments of hell and with his own eyes he saw the destruction of his parents. The torture had hardened his body, but he had lost faith in Adam, and only after the Jewish Brigade soldiers rescued him and brought him to Israel in 1946 did he recover and believe in human values. After completing his training at the religious youth village, he joined the settlement group Netivot (Kfar Darom) and received, together with his friends, additional training in Kibbutz Yavneh. When the War of Independence broke out after the United Nations General Assembly decided on November 29, 1947, to divide the country into two states, they were unable to get there and remained in Barot Yitzhak, where he became active in cultural matters until the enemy reached the gate of the agriculture. 5707 (July 15, 1948) fell as he faced the enemy who had broken into the camp. He was buried in the wells of Isaac. On the 20th of Cheshvan 5710 (31.10.1950) he was put to rest in the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
