He was born on the 24th of Adar 5727 (February 24, 1967) in the city of Washington, DC, when the family was there due to the father’s journalistic mission, the eldest son of his parents. On the occasion of Yonatan (whose nickname for family and friends was “Yoni”) two years later, the family returned to their place of residence in Jerusalem. Yoni studied at the Beit Hayeled elementary school and continued his studies at the university’s high school. Yoni was a hearty and charming child, who created extensive social relationships with youth from all walks of life. Had a prominent presence in every social circle he found himself in. Thanks to these and other features, he was chosen to participate in the popular show Ritz Run. He had a natural leadership capacity and developed social and public awareness. He was active in the Scout movement in the Modi’in tribe, first as a trainee and later as a guide and battalion commander. Yoni grew up in a home with an affinity for public affairs, and therefore sought to expand his knowledge on the subject of Israeli society. He had strong opinions, which he used to say confidently, but always with moderation, both content and tone. He also showed tolerance and respect for others’ opinions when they differed from his own. Was a young man with a sense of responsibility both in the family circle and in relation to his younger brothers – Shaul and Hillel and the movement, and later in the military framework. Yoni enlisted in the IDF in January 1986 as part of a Nahal unit that planned to settle in Har Amasa. After completing his compulsory service, he continued to serve in the career army, and became commander of a company. As a member and commander, he treated his colleagues and subordinates with great understanding and sensitivity, and took on additional tasks in order to make it easier for the families of the families who served with him as part of their reserve service.
