Engelstein, Shmuel
Son of Shprintza and Zvi, was born in 1927 in the city of Diva, Romania, and studied in an elementary school. He was a member of the Bnei Akiva youth movement and was preparing for a life of fulfillment in Israel. Shmuel was able to escape the horrors of the Holocaust and, upon liberation, strove to Zion. He spent a year in training, immigrated to Israel on the illegal immigrant ship “Knesset Yisrael” in 1946 and arrived in Israel through the last encampment in Cyprus. In Israel, he joined the Hapoel Hamizrahi movement, worked in Haifa and settled in Kiryat Frostig, Shikun HaPoel Hamizrachi in Kfar Ata. On May 16, 1948 he enlisted in the service. Revealed the qualities of a devoted and disciplined soldier in all the battles he took part in. He recently fought in the conquest of the Negev and fell on guard duty, near Crete, on the 12th of Tishrei, 5709 (October 19, 1948). On 21.12.1950 he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
