Elimelech (Elmaleh), Meir (Miro)


Meir (Miro), son of Esther and Mordechai, was born on December 7, 1942 in Casablanca, Morocco. He was nine years old when the family immigrated to Israel and settled in Moshav Yasharash. Meir was drafted into the IDF in mid-May 1960. After completing his basic training, he was trained as a truck driver and completed his service in the Israel Defense Forces without a single traffic violation. The assessments of his commanders end his praises as a responsible and devoted driver. He continued to play soccer and was one of the best soccer teams of the Central Command, and participated in IDF competitions, and at the end of 1962 he was discharged from the regular army. He worked as a driver in Ramle and later worked as a driver and firefighter at the Lod Airport, and was always very good at helping others. He was at the airport at the time of the terrorist attack in May 1972 and was saved by a miracle. When the Yom Kippur War broke out he hurried to join his unit. In honor of his heroic act, Meir received a commendation from the Chief Supply Officer, which reads: “I wish to commend 452970, the late Corporal Elimelech Meir, for his candor, resourcefulness and concern for others. The following is a description of the incident: On October 14, 1973, Corporal Meir Elimelech served as a tank driver while traveling on the Ramallah-Latrun road, losing control of the brakes, and sensing the danger he ordered the two passengers to jump out of the vehicle. In another vehicle, he turned his car to the left, but the vehicle deteriorated into the abyss – he was killed, and in this act, Corporal Meir Elimelech was very cool, resourceful and caring for others. ” Following the award of the medal, an article was published in the weekly supplement of Ma’ariv on November 14, 1975. Meir was brought to rest in the Ramle military cemetery. He left a wife, parents, three sisters and three brothers. After his death he was promoted to corporal.
