Eldar, Shmuel (Shmulik)

Shmulik attended the Smilansky elementary school and the biological track at the De Shalit high school in Rehovot. Shmulik took a lot of sports, loved nature and developed a love for country dancing. In January 1971, Shmulik joined the IDF and was accepted to a course in the IAF after he decided that this was a more significant challenge than his studies at the Technion, as he had planned, and shortly after the Yom Kippur War he completed his training course as a helicopter pilot. Shmuel met all the requirements for a master’s degree in political science in the field of national security – as an outstanding Dean. ” Towards the end of his studies he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and was appointed commander of the Palmach Air Force base, where he served until the day of his death. The helicopters number one in the army, and his son Rotem says: “You spent hours wandering around the base, the days, the nights and the Sabbath, talking to the soldiers, handing out sweets to the guards, and checking that everything was going to your satisfaction. In Rehovot, left behind a wife, son, three daughters, parents and brother, and the chief of staff, Lt. Gen. The family memorialized him in a memorial plaque of the Sefirat HaOmer, which was placed in the synagogue at the Palmahim base. On December 3, 2002, a Torah scroll was donated by the family in his name to the religious community center in Rehovot. At the Kiryat No’ar yeshiva in Jerusalem, where Shmulik had contact with her people and some worked for him when he was deputy commander of the base, a corner was erected in his memory. As part of B’nai B’rith, the family grants two scholarships annually to two students from Rehovot to help finance their academic studies.
