Elbogen, Yeshayahu-Alter


Yeshayahu-Alter, son of Bella and Yosef Elbogen, was born on December 31, 1925 in Strasbourg, France to parents of Hungarian origin. With the outbreak of World War he took part in a first aid course and during the bombing and battles, he helped save people and remove rubble. In the days of occupation and oppression he and his brother joined the French Resistance. In 1944 Yeshayahu-Alter succeeded in moving to Spain and from there he immigrated to Eretz Israel. When he arrived in Israel, he served in the local police and joined the Haganah. Yeshayahu was a traditionalist, with a deep and natural faith. In 1946 Yeshayahu-Alter retired from kibbutz life and moved to Tel Aviv, and began working in frameworks and saving money to bring over his parents from France.
At the beginning of the War of Independence, he enlisted in a religious company and was sent with reinforcements to Tirat Zvi, where he provided first aid to the fighters. In the course of the first truce, the brigade participated in the “Danny” operation and on July 17-18, 1948, towards the beginning of the second truce, the “Haemek”, many of the fighters fell into crossfire. Yeshayahu-Alter fell in this battle on the 11th of Tammuz 5708, 18.7.1948. Until the last minute he had offered help to the wounded. On the 11th of Adar 5702 (28.2.1950) he was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
