Edrey, Raphael (Rafi)
Son of Leah and Moshe, was born in 1924 in Israel. Raphael was one of the best sons of Safed who protected the city during the events of 1936-1939 and participated in its liberation during the War of Independence. He graduated from elementary school and worked as an electrician. In his youth, he joined the Hanoar Haoved movement and later became one of the leaders in Safed. For several years he served as a guard in the Jezreel Valley and returned to Safed to devote himself to guiding the youth to a defensive life, as commander of the youth battalions in the city and later as commander of the Gadna in the Tel Hai district. He was involved in preparing the Jewish Quarter in Safed for war, worked as a commander of the machine-gun squad, and was the commander of the reserve squad, and participated in the raid on Sasa, the first raid deep into the enemy territory. For the liberation of the city (May 6, 1948), he toured the Palmach forces who set out to conquer key points in the city. After the liberation of Safed, he was appointed to be one of those responsible for the enemy property. After a short period of time, he joined the Yiftach Brigade, which fought in the Negev at that time, and fell on the 28th of Tammuz 5708 (July 28, 1948) in an Egyptian bombardment of the Halutza strongholds and was buried at Kibbutz Ruhama. (17.5.1950) was transferred to the eternal rest of the military cemetery in Rosh Pina. Yad Raphael, the Gadna home in Safed, is named after him.
