Eban (Steinbock), Yosef


Yosef, son of Bracha and Zvi-Hirsch Steinbock (Eban), was born in 1913 in Poland. In 1938 he was drafted into the Polish army, and spent most of his life in the army. He was captured by the Germans, escaped and fled to Russia, where he joined the army of General Anders. With this army he came to Israel in 1941, deserted, and joined a kibbutz. After a short time, Yosef enlisted again, this time to the British army, and served from February 17, 1942 until his release on July 29, 1946. He was sent to Iraq and received a medal for his actions. Yosef enlisted to the IDF and he fell in the attempt to break through to Jerusalem on the 6th of Iyar, May 15, 1948 and was laid to rest in the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery. He left a wife, Sarah, and a daughter.
