Dror (Tashtash), Yaakov

Son of Yitzhak and Frida. Born on January 18, 1929 in Damascus, the capital of Syria, the family immigrated to Israel in 1933 and Yaakov, then only four years old, took part in an active service in the Hagana and later served in the National Military Organization against foreign rule. In August 1948. Participated in the War of Independence in the conquest of Jaffa. Worked in all kinds of crafts (such as metal polishing and tractor). Was a good person by nature and heartfelt to his family and friends. On the eve of the Six Day War it was hard for him to come to terms with the fact that he was not called to the flag and was very Simcha when he was drafted for important positions in the reserves. As he left he assured his friends: “I’m going to silence them – and I’ll go back.” But he did not return because he fell in battle on 7 July 1967 during an airplane attack on the banks of the Suez Canal. He was buried in the military cemetery in Bari and was later transferred to eternal rest in the Kiryat Shaul military cemetery.
