Deitz, Mark
He lived in London, England, and during the First World War he volunteered for the Jewish Legion – the 38th Battalion of the King’s Rifles. Together with his battalion he arrived in Palestine to participate in the conquest of the Turks. He participated in battles on the way to Nablus and in the battle over the Jordan crossings. In October 1918, his regiment, escorted by Turkish captives, made an arduous trek from the Jordan Valley to Jerusalem. Many of the soldiers fell ill and died, among them Mark. He died of his illness on October 18, 1918, and was brought to rest in the British military cemetery in Ramla.
